The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Shamrocks, one of the city’s major teams of the mid-1880s, win two games on Jan. 30.

January 30 (1882)
The St. Louis Globe-Democrat reports “a splendid gathering . . . notwithstanding the cold weather” for a football match at Sportsman’s Park the day before between the Hornets and “Capt. Mike Walsh’s eleven.” The Hornets have only nine players and lose, 1-0.

January 29 (2006)
Taylor Twellman scores the ninth hat trick in U.S. Men’s National Team history in the USA’s 5-0 win over Norway in an international friendly. Nevertheless, U.S. coach Bruce Arena will leave Twellman off the USA’s 2006 World Cup roster.
January 28 (1987)
Nebo Bandovic scores his second goal of the game at 1:55 of overtime to give the St. Louis Steamers a 6-5 exhibition win over Dynamo Moscow before 6,466 fans at The Arena.

January 27 (1985)
In a game matching goalkeepers from St. Louis, Ed Gettemeier (pictured) doesn’t allow a goal for the first 40:50 as the St. Louis Steamers defeat the New York Cosmos 4-2. The losing goalkeeper is St. Louisan and U.S. National Teamer David Brcic.

January 26 (1991)
The St. Louis Storm lose 8-6 on the road to the Tacoma Stars despite 3 goals from prolific scorer Thompson Usiyan (pictured) and a goal and 2 assists from future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Preki.

January 25 (1897)
Local newspapers report that the Diels have climbed into a first-place tie with the Cycling Club in the Association Foot-Ball League by virtue of a 2-1 win over the Cycling Club the previous day at Sportsman’s Park (lineups shown from St. Louis Globe-Democrat).

January 24 (1975)
The St. Louis Stars lose 5-3 to the Philadelphia Atoms in their opening game of the Region 1 NASL Indoor Tournament before 3,200 fans at Fair Park Coliseum in Dallas. Although the NASL is an outdoor league, the tournament is an experiment to gauge the public’s and the media’s interest in the indoor game..

January 23 (1980)
Paul Turin (pictured) stops a penalty kick, faces 46 shots and is the game’s No. 1 star as the St. Louis Steamers top the Buffalo Stallions, 9-3, before 10,848 fans on a Wednesday night at the Checkerdome.

January 22 (1922)
A St. Louis team qualifies for the National Challenge Cup championship game for the third consecutive year as Scullin Steel routs the Detroit Caledonians, 4-0, in the Western final (game summary from St. Louis Globe-Democrat).

January 21 (2022)
Josh Sargent becomes the first St. Louisan to score in the English Premier League. He tallies twice for Norwich City against Watford.

January 20 (1894)
Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Harry Ratican (pictured) is born. He will become one of the greatest players in St. Louis soccer history and will help Eastern teams Bethlehem Steel and Robins Dry Dock win the National Challenge Cup (today’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup).

January 19 (1913)
In one of the most infamous games in St. Louis soccer history, St. Leo’s and Innisfails (pictured), the top two teams in the professional St. Louis League, collide. Players fight and fans riot, forcing the game to be called with 10 minutes remaining and St. Leo’s ahead, 3-2.

January 18 (1897)
The Association Foot Ball League standings in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch show two of the most powerful St. Louis teams of the 1890s at or near the top of the six-team league. The St. Louis Cycling Club (pictured) leads with 10 wins, 2 losses and no ties for 20 points, followed by St Teresa’s with 9 wins, 3 losses and no ties for 18 points. (The league only gave 2 points for a win instead of today’s 3 points.)

January 17 (1986)
Three St. Louisans receive national soccer awards. Warren Lipka (pictured) is the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America’s goalkeeper of the year. Kevin Hundelt is given the inaugural Gatorade national high school player of the year award in ceremonies at the Clarion Hotel. Meanwhile, CBC coach Terry Michler is named national high school coach of the year

January 16 (1994)
Steve Maurer (pictured) scores at 8:39 of overtime to give the St. Louis Ambush a wild 28-26 win over the Dayton Dynamo in Dayton.

January 15 (1983)
The University of Missouri-St. Louis, the first major St. Louis college or university to field women’s soccer in 1981, lands four players on All-America teams for the 1982 season.

January 14 (1954)
St. Louisan and future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Bill Looby scores the USA’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to Mexico at the Estadio de los Deportes in Mexico City.

January 13 (2011)
St. Louisans Will Bruin (first round, pictured left) and Joe Willis (third round) are selected in the MLS Superdraft. They will play important roles for MLS teams through the 2022 season.

January 12 (1977)
An indication of the high regard for St. Louis soccer talent is the number of St. Louis players selected in the 1977 NASL draft. Fourteen of 75 picks are from St. Louis or St. Louis schools.
