Three St. Louisans receive national soccer awards. Warren Lipka is the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America’s goalkeeper of the year. Kevin Hundelt is given the inaugural Gatorade national high school player of the year award in ceremonies at the Clarion Hotel. Meanwhile, CBC coach Terry Michler is named national high school coach of the year at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention under way in St. Louis. Lipka, from Lindbergh High School,  compiled a .75 goals-against average for South Carolina during the 1985 season. Hundelt, a senior sweeper and occasional midfielder, helped Aquinas win the 1985 Missouri Class 4A championship, leading the team with 20 goals and 17 assists. Ironically, Hundelt assisted on the goal that sent the title game against Michler’s CBC Cadets into overtime. Aquinas won 3-2. Lipka will go on to play professionally indoors from 1986-91 and will be head coach of the women’s team at the University of Kentucky from 1992-2008 and at Morehead State from 2009-2021. His Kentucky and Morehead State teams will compile an overall 370-269-59 record. Hundelt will play at SIU-Edwardsville, on the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team, and professionally indoors for six teams, including the St. Louis Steamers, St. Louis Storm and St. Louis Ambush. Michler will become the nation’s all-time leader in boys’ high school coaching victories and will record his 1,000th win in his 49th season at CBC in 2019.
