Jan Gettemeyer scores two goals and adds an assist as the University of Missouri-St. Louis blasts the University of Wisconsin, 6-1, in the championship game of the National Women’s College Budweiser Soccer Tournament at UMSL. The event runs from Sept. 25-27 and is the first national women’s college soccer tournament in St. Louis. The eight-team tournament consists of Indiana, Lindenwood, Missouri-Rolla, Quincy, Southeast Missouri State and Washington University along with Wisconsin and UMSL. In the final, Maureen Lee and Peggy Keough add a goal and an assist. Patty Kelley and Theresa Klaus have a goal apiece. The Riverwomen are one of the nation’s top teams during the dawn of college women’s soccer in the early 1980s. The 1981 season is the first for varsity women’s soccer at UMSL. The season will conclude with the first-ever national women’s college soccer championship, sponsored by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) at the University of North Carolina from Nov. 19-22. UMSL will take a 16-0 record into the AIAW final four and will finish fourth. Jan Gettemeyer and her twin sister, Joan, will earn their first of three All-American selections after the 1981 season.
