The University of California men defeat San Francisco, 2-0, for the Bears’ 200th victory under head coach and St. Louis native Kevin Grimes. As a player, Grimes reached the highest level of the sport by playing for the U.S. National Team in 1988. Grimes earned his first of five caps in a 1-0 win over Guatemala on Jan. 10, 1988. A defender, Grimes played on the Scott Gallagher team that won the 1984 McGuire Cup (formerly the U.S. Junior Cup) for U-19 men’s teams. He was named a high school All-American at Rosary and was a two-time first-team All-American at Southern Methodist University. Grimes retired as Cal’s coach in February 2022 as the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories with 211 (against 152 losses and 49 ties). Grimes was Pac-12 coach of the year five times and coached the Bears to three Pac-12 titles and 13 trips to the NCAA playoffs, reaching the quarterfinals in 2005, 2010 and 2013. "The coaches who influenced my playing career also influenced my coaching career,” Grimes said when he retired. “My St. Louis hometown coaches of Tommy Howe, Dan Gaffney and John Morhmann instilled in me an incredible sense of pride in our city's heritage, tradition and legacy that are unmatched anywhere in the United States.”
