October 19th (1947)
Oct. 19, 1947: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that 45 years after humble beginnings, the Municipal Soccer Association kicks off its season with a record 119 teams. More popularly known as the “Muny League,” it began life in 1912 with only a dozen teams. The 1947-48 season sees boys’ and men’s teams in four age divisions: Senior, Intermediate, Junior and Juvenile. Games are scheduled at 16 parks and playgrounds in St. Louis. The Post-Dispatch credits the record number of teams “largely to the promotional effort of the Catholic Youth Council. About half the parishes in the city will be represented by teams.”
