Oct. 20, 1981: Pete Sorber wins his 200th game as head coach at Florissant Valley Community College when the Norsemen beat Forest Park, 1-0, at St. Louis U. High School. Sorber will go on to compile a 415-85-23 record with 10 NJCAA titles over a 30-year career at Florissant Valley that ends in 1997. He will be NJCAA coach of the year five times and will be named to the NJCAA Hall of Fame. Sorber played for a number of local teams, including McAteer’s, the 1956 Muny League champion Spanish Society and 1951 U.S. Amateur Cup semifinalist Schumacher’s before succeeding future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Harry Keough as Florissant Valley’s coach. “It’s just a lifetime of happiness,” Sorber will say about his life in soccer during a 2010 interview with Dave Lange. “You bring a ball, put two piles of leaves down or two shoes down for a goal at each end. and you play two against two or 40 against 40. Soccer is the greatest thing going.”
