Nov. 28 (1970 & 1981)

On a day for a trifecta of national championships, Florissant Valley wins the NJCAA title in 1970 and 1981, and Quincy takes the NAIA crown in 1981. In 1970, Tim Rooney ends a marathon match with a goal for Flo Valley’s Norsemen in the 11th overtime for a 2-1 victory over Lorain of Ellyra, Ohio. The game, played at Florissant Valley, lasts 2 hours 20 minutes 41 seconds. Marty Stellar scores the Norsemen’s other goal during regulation. The Norsemen have an easier time in 1981, defeating Miami Dade-North, 2-0, at Flo Valley on goals by Joe Kortkamp and Marty Bixby. Goalkeeper Dale Jeffery posts the shutout. Meanwhile, Quincy College, traditionally reliant on St. Louis players, wins its fifth consecutive NAIA title with a 4-1 victory over Alderson-Broaddus in a game played in Springfield, Ill. Three St. Louisans are on the scoresheet for the Hawks: Frank Bufe has a goal and two assists, Jack Horas scores Quincy’s first goal, and Steve Lux has an assist. The NAIA title is the ninth in 11 years for Quincy.
