Florissant Valley and Meramec capture NJCAA championships. Flo Valley takes its third consecutive title in 1971 by defeating Monroe of Rochester, N.Y., 3-2. Tim Smith scores twice and Denny Vaninger has a goal and an assist for the Norsemen, who extend their unbeaten streak to 39 games. Flo Valley’s Robin Geisz is named the tournament’s most valuable back. Geisz, Vaninger and Mark Mathis are named to the all-tournament team. In 1976, Meramec upsets undefeated Mercer County of Trenton, N.J., 3-2. Steve Gliedt scores twice and Mike Kelley has a goal and two assists. Meramec, which lost to Mercer County, 6-3, during the regular season, finishes with a 17-4-1 record. Meramec’s road to the final included a 2-1 victory over another St. Louis area team, Lewis & Clark, in the national tournament’s first round. Gliedt is named the tournament’s most valuable offensive player and John Brencick is named the most valuable defensive player. Gliedt, Brencick, Kelley, Dan Potter and goalkeeper Paul Turin are named to the all-tournament team.
