Fran Lemons ends an epic battle between St. Louis teams as Florissant Valley prevails, 2-1, over Meramec in seven overtimes in the NJCAA championship game in Miami. Flo Valley’s Steve Lucido and Meramec’s Rick Brinker score in regulation. Lemons’ goal in the seventh 5-minute overtime gives Florissant Valley its fifth national junior college title in six years — and Meramec won the championship in 1972. Lemons is named the tournament’s most valuable forward and Meramec’s Tom Redmond is named the most valuable back. The Norsemen, who lost twice to Meramec earlier in the season, finish with an 8-4-2 record. Meramec ends with a 17-2-1 record.
