Lenny Deschler scores twice as Meramec Community College completes an unlikely run to a national title with a 3-0 victory over Miami-Dade North in the NJCAA championship game. The Warriors, added to the tournament as an at-large team, prevail on a cold, muddy and snowy Saturday at Florissant Valley Community College. “The Warriors weren’t hard to stop . . . They were impossible to stop,” Tom Barnidge will write in the next day’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Meramec outshoots Miami-Dade North, 18-7, and scores its goals in the first half. Lenny Beck opens the scoring in the 13th minute, and Deschler nets his goals in the 23rd and 41st minutes. Host school Flo Valley wins the fifth-place game, beating Mercer County, 7-2.
