The University of Missouri-St. Louis (1981 team pictured) loses on penalty kicks to Connecticut in the third-place game of the first-ever women’s college soccer national championship tournament. The game went to PKs after ending, 1-1. The Riverwomen, in their first season of women’s varsity soccer, reached the national tournament semifinals with a 16-0 record, but lost to Central Florida, 4-0, in the semifinals. North Carolina defeats Central Florida, 1-0, in the final. UMSL’s Joan Gettemeyer is named to the all-tournament team. The tournament, held in Chapel Hill, N.C., is sponsored by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. The NCAA will take over the tournament in 1982. UMSL will finish fourth in the 1982 tournament.
