February 3 (1946)

The U.S. Soccer Football Association strips the 1945 U.S. Junior Cup championship from Schumachers of St. Louis for using senior players in the semifinals and finals. Chicago’s Hornets, who lost 3-1 to Schumachers in the semifinals on April 29, and Pompeii of Baltimore, which lost to Schumachers 4-1 in the finals on June 24, are declared co-champions. Senior players Pete Thompson and future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Gino Pariani were used in both games and another senior player, John Dooley, appeared in the finals. Schumachers will avenge the decision by winning legally the 1946 U.S. Junior Cup title. (The U.S. Junior Cup is known today as the McGuire Cup.)
