Oct. 17, 1948: An 89th-minute goal by Henry Merlo lifts Simpkins Ford to the U.S. Open Cup championship with a 3-2 win over the New York Brookhattans at Sportsman’s Park. Bill Bertani and Frank “Pee Wee” Wallace score Simpkins’ other goals. New York’s first goal comes from Joe Gaetjens, who will go down in history by scoring the goal in the USA’s epic 1-0 upset of England in the 1950 World Cup.
