October 16th (1982)

Oct. 16, 1982: The third-ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis women hand No. 1-ranked and defending national champion North Carolina its first-ever loss, 2-1, in a tournament in Orlando, Fla. With three minutes to play and the score deadlocked at 1-1, UMSL coach Ken Hudson subs in injured forward Patty Kelley. “She won the ball at midfield and I don’t know how she went down the field, she was limping so bad,” Hudson will tell Dave Lange in a 2010 interview. Kelley passes to Joan Gettemeyer, who drives a shot off the crossbar. The rebound falls to Kelley, who knocks in the game-winner. UMSL, which finished fourth in the first-ever national women’s college soccer championship tournament in 1981, will finish fourth again in 1982. North Carolina will successfully defend its national championship and will go on to win a total of 22 national championships, all under coach Anson Dorrance.
