Exactly six years after losing in the NAIA final to Davis & Elkins, 1-0, in five overtimes, Quincy College smashes Davis & Elkins, 6-0, in the NAIA championship game at Koch Park in Florissant. Playing at night in the snow and a biting wind before 2,813 fans, Quincy’s Hawks need only 46 seconds to score on a goal by Bill Fann. It is the first of three unassisted goals by Fann in a first half that ends 4-0. Jim Eagan, like Fann a resident of Florissant, also scores in the first half. St. Louisan Frank Vinciguerra and future City of St. Louis mayor Francis Slay score in the second half. Another Quincy player from St. Louis, Jim Pollihan, is named the NAIA tournament’s most valuable player. The Hawks celebrate their championship — and the 25th wedding anniversary of Fann’s parents — at Fann’s house after the game. The Hawks end the season with a 17-2-1 record. The NAIA title is the fifth in nine seasons for the Hawks, using almost all St. Louis players.
