November 3 (1973)
In one of the biggest college soccer matches ever played in St. Louis, Dan Counce scores the only goal of the game as No. 2-ranked St. Louis University defeats No. 1-ranked Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville before 20,112 fans at Busch Stadium, at the time the largest crowd for a U.S. college soccer game. The goal is the first given up that season by SIUE. The match pitted two NCAA national champions from 1972, when St. Louis U. won the University Division (today’s Division I) title and SIUE captured the College Division (today’s Division II) crown. SIUE moved up to Division I in 1973. The two teams will meet again in the third round of the 1973 NCAA playoffs. St. Louis U. will win, 3-0, and will go on to capture the Billikens’ 10th and last NCAA national soccer championship. Dan Counce will win the Hermann Trophy as college soccer’s top player for 1973.
