Soccer games pitting teams from St. Ambrose on The Hill against Carlstrom from nearby Dogtown, known for being “boisterous,” sink to even greater depths. A Muny League match at Forest Park erupts into a riot 16 minutes into the second half when players fight and some of the 3,500 fans swarm on the field to engage in a free-for-all. “Police were called to quell the disturbance and restore order,” the St. Louis Globe-Democrat reports. Carlstrom, trailing 2-0, pulls its team from the pitch. “Play had been rough throughout the game and, as usual, the crowd was razzing our team,” Carlstrom manager Ed Delaney tells the St. Louis Star-Times. A St. Ambrose player identified as “J. Briscuso” swings and connects with the chin of Carlstrom’s Ollie Bohlman, Delaney says. Bohlman retaliates and both players are ejected. “Back in the club-house, the boys engaged in another battle and Bohlman kayoed Briscuso,” Delaney says. Carlstrom pulls its team off the field because “there was danger of someone being killed,” Delaney says. Carlstrom’s Charley Gallagher is sent to the hospital after a St. Ambrose player “rammed his head against Gallagher’s stomach,” according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Gallagher played two or three minutes afterward, then collapsed.”
