The St. Louis Stars gain a brief 2-1 lead, but eventually succumb to Hertha Berlin of West Germany, 4-2, in an international match at Mullally Field. With Don Popovic the only non-St. Louis native in their lineup, the Stars play Hertha Berlin, which finished third in the 1969-70 Bundesliga season, on even terms or better until midway through the second half. After surrendering a goal to Wolfgang Gayer, the Stars draw even when John Pisani converts a pass from Popovic in the 64th minute. Nine minutes later, future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Pat McBride feeds Tom Bokern for the go-ahead goal. That lead lasts less than a minute. A corner kick leads to Gayer scoring out of traffic in front of the goal to put Hertha Berlin even. Franz Brungs caps a breakaway for the winning goal in the 81st minute, then scores again in the 89th minute. Hertha Berlin’s goalkeeper is Gernot Fraydl, who played for the Stars in 1968 and who will play in 27 games for Austria’s national team.
