St. Louis native Tom Barlow comes off the bench to score his first MLS goal and the game-winner as the New York Red Bulls defeat defending MLS champion Atlanta United, 2-1, despite playing a man short for 55 minutes. Barlow was a second-round draft choice in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft after scoring 23 goals in four seasons at the University of Wisconsin. He netted eight goals in 23 matches for Red Bulls II in the USL Championship in 2018, and scored twice in the team’s 2019 USL opener. Promoted to the Red Bulls’ MLS squad earlier in May, he is making his second MLS appearance against Atlanta. Subbed into the game in the 55th minute, he heads a pass from Danny Royer 10 minutes later back across the goal and into the net, beating Atlanta and USMNT goalkeeper Brad Guzan for what proves to the match’s deciding goal. “Dream come true,” Barlow says afterward. “I couldn’t picture a better day.” He will finish the regular season with three goals and will score in the playoffs against the Philadelphia Union.
