Carl Gentile gives a preview of things to come as the recent CBC graduate scores the winning goal, and an insurance tally, to help Schumachers win the U.S. Junior Cup with a 3-1 victory over Good Counsel of Baltimore at Washington University. In a game dominated by Schumachers, who outshoot Good Counsel 29-9, the visitors open the scoring 12 minutes into the second half of the 60-minute game. Bill Matzuk lofts the ball off the goal post and into the net to put Good Counsel ahead. Schumachers is awarded a penalty kick a few minutes later. Jerry Mueller converts the kick to tie the score. Gentile breaks the tie on a pass from John Zenson with 10 minutes left, then beats two defenders seven minutes later to score the game’s final goal. Gentile, an outstanding athlete in several sports, will begin his freshman year in the fall of 1962 at St. Louis University to play baseball and soccer. Gentile will help the soccer Billikens win NCAA championships in 1963 and 1965. He will become the Bills’ all-time leading scorer with 160 points on 67 goals and 26 assists over three seasons at a time when freshmen were prohibited from playing on college varsities. Only future U.S. international Brian McBride will surpass Gentile at St. Louis U. with 184 points on 72 goals and 40 assists over four seasons from 1990-93.
