A firecracker finish finds Big Four Chevrolet of St. Louis on the losing end of a 3-2 score to defending U.S. Amateur Cup champion Philadelphia Inter in the Amateur Cup championship game at Florissant Valley Community College. Big Four’s Pat Leahy levels the score with a goal on a penalty kick less than three minutes from the end of regulation. But Inter’s Bob Ludleg beats two Big Four defenders, then curls a drive around goalkeeper Chuck Zorumski for the winning goal with less than a minute remaining. “I thought if we went to overtime we would have the momentum to win,” Big Four coach Dave Berwin tells Don Poston of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “But, well, that was just a great goal by Ludleg and they won.” The game marks the last appearance by a St. Louis team in the Amateur Cup final until Busch wins U.S. Amateur Cups in 1980 and 1981.
