Goalkeeper Mike Winter (pictured) chills the Toronto Metros while Steve Frank, Pat McBride, Al Trost and Denny Vaninger combine to provide the goals in the St. Louis Stars’ 2-1 North American Soccer League win in Toronto. The Stars’ future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famers, McBride and Trost, team to open the scoring in the 35th minute. McBride’s pass sets up Trost for his fifth goal of the season. In the 50th minute, Frank drives a long cross into the goal area and Vaninger heads the ball into the net to break a 1-1 deadlock. Winter, the 1972 NASL rookie of the year who played in six games with the U.S. National Team in 1972-73, comes up with critical saves over the last 40 minutes. Winter’s biggest save stops a penalty kick by Scotty Burns in the 65th minute. The 1974 outdoor season will be Winter’s third and last with the Stars. The Austrian-born Winter will play one more outdoor season in the NASL, appearing in one game with the Chicago Sting in 1975.
