St. Louisan Josh Sargent equals the U.S. scoring record in the U-20 World Cup with his fourth goal of the tournament as the United States beats New Zealand, 6-0, in the round of 16 at Incheon, South Korea. Sargent’s goal comes when Justen Glad’s shot deflects slightly off Sargent before going into the net. Although not the prettiest goal, “there was something poetic about matching the record that way; right place, right time,” according to a story on fifa.com. Sargent’s goal ties him with Jozy Altidore, Eddie Johnson and St. Louisan Taylor Twellman. “He’s been superb along with all the boys from #ussoccer,” Twellman posts on social media. Just 10 days earlier, the 17-year-old Sargent became the youngest player in U.S. history to score in the men’s U-20 World Cup. The victory over New Zealand moves the United States into the quarterfinals, where the Americans will lose to Venezuela, 2-1, on June. 4. Sargent will not score. But he will win the Silver Boot award as the tournament’s second-leading scorer with four goals and one assist.
