Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Jimmy Dunn is born. Dunn will be remembered as the player whose goal will clinch the first of 90 national championships (U.S. Open, Amateur and Junior Cups, and NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA titles) for St. Louis teams. Playing for the Ben Millers, a team of all-St. Louis players, Dunn will break a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 63rd minute in the final of the National Challenge Cup (today’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) against Fore River, Mass., a team of all-English and Scottish players, on May 9, 1920. Dunn will play nine seasons for Ben Miller in a career that will be interrupted for two years while he serves in the Navy during World War I. He will play in one more National Challenge Cup final for Ben Miller in its loss to Bethlehem Steel in 1926. He will be inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 1974. His son, Ebbie, will be inducted into the National Soccer Coaches Association of American section of the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 1993 after a long and successful career as head soccer coach at St. Louis University High School.
