Sept. 4 (2018)

Alyssa Mautz scores the first two goals of the game as the Chicago Red Stars shoot to a 5-0 National Women’s Soccer League win over Sky Blue at Toyota Park outside Chicago. The match is the Red Stars’ second-to-last game of the regular season and clinches a berth in the NWSL playoff semifinals. The fireworks begin in the 18th minute when Mautz, running diagonally from the right, heads in a cross delivered from the left corner by Arin Gilliland. Gilliland and Mautz connect again in the 46th minute when Mautz slides and redirects a cross with her right foot for a goal. The goals are the fourth and fifth of the season for Mautz (shown above celebrating her second goal of the game), who played at Fort Zumwalt West High School, St. Louis University and Texas A&M before turning pro in 2011. The Red Stars will finish the regular season with a 9-5-10 record and head for the semifinals, where they will lose, 2-0, to eventual NWSL champion North Carolina Courage on Sept. 18.
