Oct. 3, 1976: Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Al Trost puts in a hard-nosed performance as the United States and Mexico play to a scoreless draw in a World Cup qualifier before 31,171 fans at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. The future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer starts and plays until a second-half head-butt puts him out of the game. He returns five minutes later and finishes the match with what is diagnosed as a broken nose. Two other St. Louisans are in the starting lineup. Defender Sam Bick plays the first 58 minutes. Jim Pollihan plays the entire match. The U.S. team will lose, 3-0, to Mexico in Puebla, Mexico, on Oct. 15.
