October 27th (1989)

Oct. 27, 1989: A St. Louisan comes home to spoil the debut of the St. Louis Storm. Kevin Hundelt scores the game-winning goal 48 seconds into the fourth quarter as the Kansas City Comets defeat the Storm, 3-2, in a Major Indoor Soccer League match before 14,975 fans at the Arena. Hundelt had played for the St. Louis Steamers in their final season in 1987-88. The Don Popovic-coached Storm assemble a dazzling array of talent, including future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer and Indoor Soccer Hall of Famer Fernando Clavijo, future Indoor Soccer Hall of Famers Daryl Doran, Slobo Ilijevsi and Stan Terlecki, and U.S. National Team veteran David Brcic. The Storm begin their first season with seven St. Louisans: Doran, Brcic, Terry Brown, John Klein, David Eise, Mark Frederickson and Tim Walters. But the abundance of talent will translate into a 24-28 regular-season record and 1-3 playoff mark in the Storm’s first season. The Storm will last only two more seasons and will cease operations after the 1991-92 campaign.
