October 10th (1962)

Oct. 10, 1962: St. Louis University begins a winning streak that will take the Billikens to their third NCAA championship by edging Harris Teachers College, 2-1. The game is part of a double-header at Fairground Park. Washington University, coached by future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Joe Carenza Sr., blanks MacMurray, 3-0, in the other match. It’s just the fourth season of NCAA-sanctioned men’s soccer. St. Louis U., directed by future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Bob Guelker and winners of the first two NCAA titles in 1959 and 1960, are trying to rediscover their championship form after losing in the 1961 NCAA finals to West Chester, 2-0. After beating Harris Teachers, the Bills will win their next 10 games, culminating in a 4-3 decision over Maryland in the NCAA final. Their winning streak will reach 21 before the Bills lose in a match against Michigan State on Nov. 9, 1963.
