Chris Klein earns his first cap in the United States’ 2-0 win over Mexico in a friendly before 60,000 fans at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. The game also marks the U.S. debut of 18-year-old Landon Donovan. Donovan comes off the bench and opens the scoring in the 50th minute. He sets up Josh Wolff for the second goal in the 79th. For Klein, it will be his first of 22 caps for the United States. The DeSmet High School product will reach the high-water mark of his U.S. career in 2003, when he scores three goals in seven games. The midfielder will play 333 games and score 49 goals during a Major League Soccer career that runs from 1998-2010. His 333 MLS games played are more than any other St. Louisan except Brad Davis (392) and Steve Ralston (378). Klein’s playing career will end with the Los Angeles Galaxy, where he will continue in the front office. The Galaxy will name Klein as its president in January 2013, a position he will hold until May 30, 2023. Klein will be one of nine local soccer greats inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 2024.
