St. Louisan Carl Gentile starts the scoring for the United States in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Bermuda at National Stadium in Hamilton, Bermuda. Gentile’s free kick deflects off a Bermuda player into the net in the eighth minute and is scored as an own goal. Nick Krat, Gentile’s teammate with the NASL’s St. Louis Stars, also starts for the United States. Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Willy Roy adds the second goal in the 41st minute. Roy will play for the Stars from 1971-74. The victory over Bermuda advances the United States to the two-game semifinal series against Haiti in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. The United States will lose both matches to Haiti and will fail to qualify for the 1970 World Cup.
