Nov. 5 (1972)

In a game between eventual national champions that will go down in SIU-Edwardsville history as the “3-1 tie,” the Cougars and St. Louis U.’s Billikens battle to a 1-1 standoff before 14,459 fans at Busch Stadium. SIUE’s Chris Carenza has two goals nullified, one for offsides and another for a foul officials ruled on Carenza against Joe Clarke before the goal. The goals that count come from SLU’s Denny Hadican in the 39th minute and from SIUE’s Steve Cacciatore in the 59th minute. The result gives St. Louis U. a 10-2-3 record and SIUE a 7-0-2 record. For the first time, the NCAA has divided its soccer competition into two divisions in 1972 — and the Bills will win the University Division (today’s Division I) national title while SIUE will take the College Division (today’s Division II) championship.
