March 20 (1932)
Jack O’Reilly, playing in place of injured forward Joe McCarthy, scores the game’s only goal 20 seconds into the match as Stix, Baer & Fuller defeats the Chicago Bricklayers in the National Challenge Cup (today’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) Western final. The Bricklayers, composed entirely of foreign-born players, had lost in the 1931 National Challenge Cup finals and had lost only once in the 1931-32 season before facing Stix. O’Reilly, a former football player at St. Louis University, scored from 7 yards out on a pass from Frank Pastor. The victory advances Stix to the two-game national championship finals, which they will lose 5-4 on total goals to the New Bedford (Mass.) Whalers.
