Taylor Twellman reaches the century mark in MLS goal-scoring faster than anyone, driving in No. 100 (and 101) in his 174th and last MLS game. Twellman, who grew up in St. Louis and was a talented multisport athlete at St. Louis U. High, will be limited to just two appearances in 2009 in the aftermath of a head injury suffered on Aug. 30, 2008. The New England Revolution will place him on the disabled list on June 26 because of post-concussion issues. Twellman never will play pro soccer again. He will retire in November 2010 at age 30. Asked his biggest career disappointment, he will say: “Not playing longer. It is hard for any athlete who does not get the most out of their ability. At age 28, for your career to end . . .” He will advocate for better education about concussion-related issues through his “Think Taylor” foundation and will become a soccer broadcast analyst.
