The USA wins the Women’s World Cup with a 5-2 victory over Japan in Vancouver. St. Louis native Becky Sauerbrunn plays every minute of every game and St. Louisan Lori Chalupny is a substitute in one game. Chalupny will retire at the end of the year with 106 appearances for the United States, more than any other male or female player in St. Louis soccer history. Sauerbrunn will pass Chalupny’s total and will start on the USA’s 2019 Women’s World Cup champions. Sauerbrunn, who will miss the 2023 Women’s World Cup because of an injury, has 216 appearances for the USA.
