Future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Frank Valicenti is born. His family will change their last name to Wallace, and he will be nicknamed “Pee Wee.” “Pee Wee” Wallace will serve in the U.S. Army as a tanker in World War II and will be captured after his tank is hit in Italy. After the war, he will play outside left (similar to a left-wing forward) in the old W-M formation for Simpkins Ford, the 1948 and 1950 U.S. Open Cup champions. His most memorable moments in soccer will come at the 1950 World Cup, when he will be one of five starters from St. Louis in the United States’ 1-0 upset of England. He will score three goals in seven appearances during his career with the U.S. National Team.
