Guy Busch tallies twice to unknot a 2-2 game and help Kutis defend its 1963 U.S. Junior Cup title by defeating Philadelphia’s Lighthouse Celtics, 4-2, in the U.S. Junior Cup championship game at Public Schools Stadium. Rich Nelke and Tom Knapp score for Kutis in the first half, which ends in a 2-2 deadlock. Busch, a graduate of nearby McBride High School, converts a pass from Nelke for the winning goal with 13 minutes left. Busch adds an insurance goal five minutes later. He nearly scores a third in the final seconds, but his shot hits the goalpost. Busch, who had scored two goals in the Junior Cup semifinals, will go on to an All-American career at Michigan State, where he still holds the Spartans’ single-season scoring record with 24 goals. He will help the Spartans share the NCAA co-championship with St. Louis University in 1967. The victory in the Junior Cup final caps an unbeaten season for Kutis, a juggernaut that finishes with a 19-0 record, 99 goals scored and six goals allowed.
