Raftery’s of St. Louis works overtime to advance to the U.S. Amateur Cup finals by defeating Pittsburgh’s Morgan Strassers, 2-1, in the Western final at Walsh Stadium, 5100 Oakland Ave. Harold “Red” Travis scores what proves to be the game-winner three minutes into the first 15-minute overtime. His goal comes off a cross from future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Gino Pariani and beats substitute goalkeeper Tony Kochosky. The Strassers’ starting goalkeeper, Al DiOrio, plays well early in the game, but moves to halfback to replace the injured Dan Gossett. Numerous players for both sides suffer leg cramps and at least two other players suffer injuries. The Strassers’ Nick DiOrio opens the scoring in the 48th minute. Raftery’s Bobby Corbett ties the game in the 75th minute.  Raftery’s, which lost, 2-0, in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals to the Cleveland Americans almost a month earlier, will lose, 1-0, to Eintracht of Astoria, N.Y., in the U.S. Amateur Cup championship game in New York July 8.
