Dan Counce scores twice — the second at 5:43 of overtime — to lift St. Louis University to a 2-1 victory over UCLA in the NCAA Division I championship game at the Orange Bowl in Miami. The Billikens had earned the right to play for the championship by defeating Brown in the semifinals. The title marks the Billikens’ 10th and last NCAA Division I championship. St. Louis U. finishes the season with a 13-1-3 record. Counce, a senior, is selected the tournament’s most valuable player. He will win the Hermann Trophy as college soccer’s top player for the 1973 season. He will earn five caps with the U.S. National Team, and play professionally in the NASL and MISL until 1984. He will play for the Steamers in their inaugural season in 1979-80, will score 21 goals, and will be named the team’s MVP. He will work in management with several teams, including the MLS Colorado Rapids. He will be the Rapids’ general manager and will be named MLS executive of the year in 2002.
