Under the headline “RIOT AT SPORTSMAN’S PARK,”  the next day’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch will call a game between the Cappels and the Cyclists “the most disgraceful riot ever seen on a St. Louis football field . . . Dan Daly of the Cyclists, a man named Kavanaugh, and several others received broken heads.” A dozen police officers arrive to quell the disturbance. “There has been bad blood in this league all year, and it bubbled over yesterday,” the newspaper will write the next day. “The row started when Myddleton of the Cyclists and Finnegan of the Cappels came together in a rough and tumble scrap.” The Cyclists win, 7-1.
