St. Louis Steamers forward Tony Glavin, whose several nicknames include “the Motor Man,” lives up to the nickname by driving the Western Division to a 9-5 win over the East in the MISL All-Star Game in Buffalo, N.Y. He then drives a 1983 Ford Ranger off the Memorial Auditorium floor, his prize for being the game’s Budweiser MVP with three goals and two assists. In his second season with the Steamers, Glavin will go on to score 157 goals in 153 games with the Steamers through 1987. Glavin will replace future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Pat McBride as the Steamers’ head coach in February 1987, and he will go on to serve as an assistant coach for the Kansas City Comets, as well as playing 29 games and scoring four goals, from 1987-91. He will establish the Tony Glavin Soccer Club for youth players in 1994 and the United Soccer Leagues’ St. Louis Lions for men in 2005. The Lions will add a women’s team in the WPSL in 2018. (The Tony Glavin Soccer Club will merge with St. Charles FC in 2022 and the Lions’ men’s and women’s teams will cease operations.) Glavin will be head coach of the St. Louis Ambush from 2015-17 and will be part owner of the team.
