A St. Louisan stars at the Arena, but not for the Steamers. David Brcic, a former U.S. National Teamer, stuns the Steamers with an exceptional goalkeeping performance in preserving a 4-3 win for the Pittsburgh Spirit before 8,960 fans. He blanks the Steamers in the fourth quarter, turning back nine shots, including several in the last frantic minute as the Steamers pull goalkeeper Slobo Ilijevski with the Spirit already down a man. Brcic started his pro career outdoors with the NASL’s New York Cosmos from 1977-84, including one season on loan with Scottish first-division club Greenock Morton. Brcic appeared four times for the U.S. National Team, including an appearance in a scoreless tie with Italy and a 4-0 World Cup qualifying shutout of Netherlands Antilles. He was the starting goalkeeper for the United States in the 1984 Olympics. Brcic will play indoors for six different teams, and will finish his career in the 1989-90 season with the St. Louis Storm.
