Josh Sargent is named the U.S. Young Male Player of the Year. The 17-year-old striker from O’Fallon, Mo., nets 19 goals and 4 assists in 22 appearances with the U.S. U-17 and U-20 teams. He captains the U-17 squad at its World Cup, then wins the Silver Boot as the second-leading goal-scorer in the U-20 World Cup. “Josh Sargent was one of the great stories of 2017 on the men’s side, with his goalscoring prowess and electrifying play,” starsandstripesfc.com writes in its Dec. 21, 2017, post. Sargent’s career will come into full bloom in 2018, when he plays for the U.S. Men’s National Team and signs a professional contract with Bundesliga club Werder Bremen on his 18th birthday on Feb. 20. He will become the first St. Louisan to score in the English Premier League when he nets two for Norwich City against Watford on Jan. 21, 2022. Sargent, today a forward for Norwich City in the English Championship, will play well for the United States in the 2022 World Cup before an injury takes him out of the U.S. lineup after the group stage.
