St. Louis University’s two-time All-American, senior Mark Santel, looks into the crystal ball in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch preview of the coming season and predicts, “We’ve got (freshman) Brian McBride, who’ll score.” Will he ever. The Chicago native (pictured) will become the Billikens’ all-time leading scorer, then will go on to a stellar career in the English Premier League and with the U.S. Men’s National Team in a career that will lead to the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. Then-SLU head coach Joe Clarke never will forget McBride’s first impression at preseason training. “We had played thirty or forty minutes of an intrasquad game and our two center backs, Steve Bee and Richie Bright, came over to tell me, ‘This guy is friggin’ good,’” Clarke tells Dave Lange in a 2010 interview. McBride will score 72 goals in his four seasons at St. Louis U. and help them reach the NCAA Division I semifinals in 1991. For three of those seasons, McBride will team with midfielder and St. Louis native Mike Sorber, another future standout with the USMNT. Santel will be an All-American in 1990 for a third time and will play in MLS from 1996-2001. Santel will play 13 times for the USMNT.
