St. Louisan and future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Jimmy Roe heads for New York to begin his first-ever tour as a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team. The USMNT will travel to Mexico for a four-game series with Mexico starting Sept. 12. Roe is a “clever little inside left forward,” according to future U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame journalist Dent McSkimming of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Roe had been a key player on St. Louis teams that reached six consecutive U.S. Open Cup finals, winning three of them, from 1932-37. Roe tells McSkimming that a knee injury suffered in the Open Cup finals in April “is to all appearances in good repair.” But he will reinjure the knee before the first game of the tour, which will end his career at age 28.
