April 21 (1963)
Sonny Vitale (pictured) scores twice and St. Louis U. players Bill Vieth and Pat McBride have one each as the St. Louis CYC All-Stars beat St. Catherines United, 4-0, in a match pitting the CYC’s stars against an international club. The CYC All-Stars’ opposition hails from St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, and is not up to the caliber of many visitors in CYC-international matches. Liverpool, for example, will play the CYC All-Stars in 1964 shortly after winning the English first-division championship. The match against St. Catherines, played on a bright spring afternoon at St. Mary Magdalen’s, sees Vitale, normally a halfback, score the game’s first and last goals playing forward. The game’s third goal, by future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer McBride, is termed a “triple-header:” Pete Traub heads the ball to future U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Bobby Kehoe, who heads the ball to McBride, who then heads the ball into the net.
