Learn how soccer builds a stronger St. Louis through outreach to the community at the Missouri History Museum. A distinguished group of soccer authorities, organized into three panels, will discuss how soccer is being made available to those with special needs (Panel 1), underserved groups (Panel 2) and everyone regardless of skill levels (Panel 3). The panelists will cover how their efforts promote involvement, unite communities, and generate civic pride. Panelists include Kevin Byrne, board member, Special Needs Soccer Association; Ken Godat, Youth Academy Technical Director, St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club, which hosts SPENSA events; Staci Bush, SPENSA parent; Brocklon Chatman, athletic director, St. Mary’s South Side Catholic High School; Sascha Bauer, director of regional training and education, St. Louis CITY SC Futures Program; Tim Twellman, community relations consultant, St. Louis CITY Soccer Club; Dan Fitzgerald, director, Catholic Youth Council Sports; Damian Jones, executive director, Student Athletes Leading Tomorrow; Evelyn Rice-Peebles, recreation commissioner, City of St. Louis; Mary Kate Morley Ryan, St. Louis Pick Up Soccer; and Tim Tettambel, co-founder and board president, New Dimensions Soccer. “Mr. Soccer” Bill McDermott and St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame president Jim Leeker will kick off Panel 1 with a brief look back at soccer’s heyday as a popular sport in St. Louis neighborhoods. Panel discussions will be led by Dave Lange, author of “Soccer Made in St. Louis: A History of the Game in American’s Capital,” from Reedy Press. Copies of the second edition will be available for purchase and for signing. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and panel discussions will run from 6:30-8 p.m. While at the museum, check out the “Soccer City” exhibit that presents graphics, digital interactives, films, and artifacts that tell the story of St. Louis, the nation’s first soccer capital.
